Behavioral Health Fireweed Clinic

Behavioral Health Fireweed (BHF) Clinic is a community mental health center which offers a culturally based, client-centered model of care by combining the strength of traditional beliefs with contemporary clinical practices. We serve both Native and Non-Native children, adolescents, adults, and families.

We provide screening, assessment and outpatient individual, group, family, and play therapy as well as psychiatric and medication management where needed. In addition, BHF has six specialized programs: Willa’s Way, TRAILS, The Young Families Project, SBIRT, Behavioral Health Aide Program and the Tribal Youth Diversion Program. Further, we are providing behavioral health and substance abuse related services to the community of McGrath and the surrounding villages.

Willa’s Way is operated in partnership with Abused Women’s Aid in Crisis (AWAIC) and provides temporary shelter for Native women. For more information click on Willa’s Way tab on the menu bar.

TRAILS is a rehabilitation service for severely emotionally disturbed adolescents. The primary treatment modality is group skill development that involves face to face therapeutic skill instruction, skill practice and skill monitoring. The TRAILS program is designed to develop or improve specific self-care, self-direction, communication and social interaction skills necessary for successful community adjustment and interaction with people in the client’s home, school, work or community environment.

The Young Families Project is designed to enhance the quality and quantity of services provided to young children and their families in Anchorage. This project has two program emphases: to improve the educational aspects of the organization’s center based Head Start programs and to help young parents become active partners in the education of their children, through parenting skill training.

SBIRT - Cook Inlet Tribal Council and Southcentral Foundation have been awarded this agreement by The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment to provide screening, brief intervention, referral and brief treatment (SBIRT) to nondependent substance users. Clients are screening in the Primary Care setting and if they score positive, they are offered a referral for brief intervention. This is a voluntary program.

TYDE - In partnership with the Cook Inlet Tribal Council and the Alaska Native Justice Center, we accept referrals from the Tribal Youth Diversion Effort (TYDE). TYDE is a program for adolescents ages 13-18 who have been in trouble with the law. TYDE provides culturally appropriate services that address the needs of the client through a combination of assessment, referral and community-based diversion options.

Behavioral Health Aide Program is a village based program designed to deliver substance abuse and behavioral health counseling services to the seven villages in the Cook Inlet Regional area - Eklutna, Kenaitze, Ninilchik, Chickaloon, Tyonek, Knik and Seldovia. Three Behavioral Health Aides will be trained and certified to provide services in these seven villages. In addition, SCF will provide medical supervision for rural Anchorage Service Unit Behavioral Health Aide positions.

McGrath and surrounding villages - this SCF Sub-regional out patient clinic will offer emergency and children services, also substance abuse/dependence assessment and treatment for McGrath and the surrounding villages. In collaboration with the school district, local Office of Children’s services and others in the community concerned about children and youth, the program will develop a coordinated community response to the behavioral health needs of the children and youth.

Behavioral Health Primary Care Center (BH-PCC)

The BH-PCC provides outpatient group and individual therapies primarily to adults. We also offer psychiatry evaluation and medication management as well as neuropsychology. Further, we provide an urgent response service to triage and treat psychiatric emergencies and psychological crisis. In addition, we offer diagnostic services to those whom may be dealing with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), this includes support and referral services for the caregivers of those individuals and training for the providers. A pediatric psychologist provides testing for the children being seen by the FAS Diagnostic Team.

Finally, we offer a consultation/liaison service predominately to the Alaska Native Medical Center inpatient units, but it is available to clinicians in the primary care clinics. This is a provider to provider service to assess patients quickly and give recommendations to the primary treatment team.
