Southcentral Foundation in the News:

Southcentral Foundation continues to garner national attention for its unique organizational and health care system. The Nuka System of Care was featured as a model for other health care organizations in the New York Times editorial, “A Formula for Cutting Health Costs.” As part of a series of articles on Alaska Native and American Indian health and wellness, The Oregonian published the article, “Alaska Native medical center a model for curbing costs, improving health.”

Learn how we are being recognized both nationally and locally:

Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award awarded for performance excellence; this award was established by Congress in 1987 and is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive.

Cerner Consulting Project Excellence Award awarded for best-in-class Electronic Health Record implementation.

2011 Health Award and Healing Hands Award presented at the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention, the largest representative annual gathering in the U.S. of any Native peoples.

People have traveled from afar to learn more about how Alaska Native people have shaped health care:

Southcentral Foundation hosted health care leaders from all over the world for its inaugural Nuka Conference – nearly 200 attendees expressed interest in replicating Nuka practices within their respective health programs.

And, people have shared the successes of Alaska Native people with others:

Deputy Director of Public Health Margaret Hannah, from Fife, Scotland, shared the lessons she learned during the Nuka Conference in Scotland's leading policy magazine.

Camai! Welcome!

For thousands of years, Alaska Native people have been working together for the good of the whole community and sharing responsibility for improvements. We continue these traditions today with Southcentral Foundation’s (SCF) Nuka System of Care.

Nuka is built around the value of Shared Responsibility, ensuring systems and services are respectful and culturally appropriate. It is about achieving excellence in customer-owner satisfaction and connecting the Native Community with services that benefit everyone. SCF has a full array of services to achieve our shared vision of “A Native Community that enjoys physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellness.”

For example:

These are just a few of the programs that serve our customers both directly and as internal support. And all this hard work is being recognized! Most recently, we received the 2012 Indian Health Service Director's Award. We have also been recognized by the Alaska Native Health Board, the Alaska congressional delegation, Alaska Public Health Association, Rasmuson Foundation, the Mat-Su Health Foundation, the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, the Alaska Governor's office, the Anchorage mayor's office and many others.

For the last 30 years, SCF has worked with the community toward this vision of wellness. We look forward to the next 30 years of working together!

May we continue to be blessed in our journey,

Katherine Gottlieb
