Sharing is one of our traditional Alaska Native values. And in the spirit of sharing, we disseminate what we have learned. Southcentral Foundation is proving that quality and availability of health care services can continually be enhanced without skyrocketing costs.
Our data show we have achieved a more than 25 percent increase in childhood immunizations, performance in diabetes care in the 95th percentile for national standards, a reduction in both asthma care and HIV care admissions to one-third the number experienced in the past, depression screening rates at a soaring 80 percent, and a long list of other positive health indicators. Southcentral Foundation continues to embrace change to deliver better, and more responsive, health and related services. Over the next couple of months, SCF hopes to complete several new projects with each initiative focused on the goal of working together with the Native Community to achieve wellness.
Three new therapeutic family group homes will welcome its first set of teaching-parents and adolescents this month. Southcentral Foundation’s Therapeutic Family Group Home (TFGH) program serves Alaskan youth, ages 14 to 18, experiencing challenges with home, school and community life. The program will provide an array of individualized services and skill-building opportunities.
The Southcentral Foundation’s Pathway Home, now on its seventh year, has a capacity to house 30 young men, ages 13 through 17, who are in need of behavioral, mental health, and substance abuse services. The program offers culturally sensitive treatment with educational, vocational and cultural aspects. Through participation in a new grant-funded music, arts and theater program, Pathway Home youth are exposed to a variety of Native art forms that open new ways to discover their potential and increase their cultural pride. If you would like more information or know a youth who would benefit from the Pathway Home’s services, please call 729-5020.
In February, Southcentral Foundation leadership formed an External Advisory Committee for Research to discuss methodologies and elements needed for a sustainable research program. This was the first meeting of two planned for 2008. The committee is made up of national experts on research who are assisting Southcentral Foundation’s Research Department develop its three-year strategic plan. The main goal of Southcentral Foundation’s research is to better understand disease and illness, so both treatment and prevention are guided in the best possible way.
These projects have been a culmination of months and even years of hard work. We are grateful to all of the people, organizations and agencies who are on this journey with us to make these improvements to our services and to our system of care.
Quyanaasinaq! (Thank you very much!)
The Family Wellness Warriors Initiative (FWWI) is a movement that brings together leaders of the Alaska Native Community, the faith community, regional corporations and agencies, health care providers, and many other interested people, in an effort to restore wellness to the Alaska Native Community. It specifically addresses all forms of violence that occur within the family. These include child abuse and neglect, sexual abuse, vulnerable adult abuse and neglect, domestic violence, and adult sexual assault.
The Family Wellness Warriors Initiative is able to provide education and training services through grant awards and private donations. We are a non-profit program and in order to continue offering education, training, and healing opportunity’s to the people of Alaska we rely on donation assistance from others who believe in the process and who share a similar desire to end domestic violence, abuse, and neglect in the State of Alaska in this generation.
SCHOLARSHIP: These donations provide scholarship opportunities for those who cannot afford to attend a training event.
TRAVEL: These donations provide travel opportunities for those who are unable to transport themselves from rural Alaskan villages and communities to attend a training event.
LEADERSHIP: These donations provide support to our growing number of volunteers and group leaders who donate their time, energy, and support to assist FWWI in staffing events, speaking and storytelling at events, and leading small groups.
If you are unable to offer donation support but are interested in becoming part of our Prayer Warrior email database, please visit us at www.fwwi.org and email us to let us know you would like added to this database. Joining this prayer database means you will be able to receive and submit prayer request, praises, and updates with FWWI event alumni from around the state.
