Tribal Ownership of Research

At Southcentral Foundation

Southcentral Foundation practices tribal ownership of research. So, what does that mean? It means that Alaska Native people are in charge of research that involves our customer-owner population. In some instances, the approval process may include other tribal organizations like the Aleutian/Pribilof Islands Association located in the Rural Anchorage Service Unit.

Tribal Review Process

Southcentral Foundation has a set of steps researchers must follow to get their research approved.

Southcentral Foundation's Board of Directors, the Research, Abstract and Manuscript Committee and privacy board all review the research proposal. It is also reviewed by the Alaska Area Institutional Review Board (AAIRB). For more information about the review process, visit:

Guidelines for Researchers

Southcentral Foundation has a one-page "Guidelines for Researchers". It tells researchers what Southcentral Foundation will be paying close attention to.

For example, Southcentral Foundation takes a very close look at proposed research that involves Alaska Native elders and anything about alcohol. We ensure the research will help Alaska Native people and not just involve us as test subjects. To learn more about "Guidelines for Researchers,"; visit:
