This year, it will be more important than ever to get the flu vaccine. Protect yourself, your family, and your community by getting vaccinated. Flu and COVID-19 are both respiratory illnesses and have many similar symptoms but are caused by different viruses. Help lessen the burden of illness and decrease the use of health care resources this flu season by taking preventative measures. Get the flu vaccine, avoid contact with those who may be sick, cover your coughs and sneezes, clean frequently touched surfaces, and avoid touching your nose, ears, and mouth.
What are the symptoms of the flu?
- Cough
- Fever or feeling feverish/chills
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Body aches or muscle pain
- Headache
- Some people may experience vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
Who should get vaccinated?
Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine every season with rare exceptions. Children 5 years old or less, those 65 and older, and those diagnosed with other medical conditions may be at higher risk for serious complications from the flu and it is particularly important to get the flu vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting a flu vaccine in September or October but getting vaccinated anytime during the flu season can protect you.
Why should I get the flu vaccine?
The flu vaccine can help prevent you from getting sick with flu and prevent flu-associated hospital and clinic visits. The flu vaccine also helps reduce the risk of serious complications. Getting a flu vaccine can also save health care resources for the care of customer-owners with COVID-19.
Where do I get a flu vaccine in Anchorage?
This year, Southcentral Foundation is offering flu vaccines with a drive-thru clinic on the Alaska Native Health Campus ANPCC West Parking Lot located at 4320 Diplomacy Drive. The drive-thru clinic will be held Saturdays on Oct. 1, 8, 15, and 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Customer-owners must be 6 months or older, be eligible to receive services at ANMC, and wear a mask in the drive-thru. No appointments necessary. Talk with your provider if you have any questions or concerns.

If you live in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, flu vaccines can be received at Benteh Nuutah Valley Native Primary Care Center and C’eyiits’ Hwnax Life House Community Health Center. Contact your primary care team to schedule an appointment.
