SCF Recognized as Simply Brilliant in New Book

While conducting research for Simply Brilliant, a book about how great organizations do ordinary things in extraordinary ways, business writer and entrepreneur William C. Taylor partnered with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He asked them, “If I can visit only one health care organization in the United States, where should I go?”

Their answer was “Get to Alaska and visit Southcentral Foundation!” Taylor features SCF and 14 other organizations in his book. He picked which ones to write about by attending conferences and visiting several organizations to see what they do. He wanted to see how they brought their ideas to fruition. For SCF, he says, “There are lots of smart people out there, but we are now in a world where it is just as important to be kind as it is to be clever. Southcentral Foundation understands this new reality better than any organization I have ever studied.”

Taylor interviewed SCF’s leadership when he visited the campus. While speaking with President/CEO Dr. Katherine Gottlieb, he was ready to dive-in with questions for his book, but was pleasantly surprised when she asked him first about his life and his story. Afterwards, she shared her story with him. Taylor said that speaks to who she is as a leader. He described Gottlieb as “not just interesting, but interested in others; not just brilliant, but engaged with other people; not just proud and confident, but humble and self-effacing.”

What connects SCF and the other organizations featured in the book is “they rethink and reimagine what’s possible in their field.” Taylor understands that these organizations are looking for new ideas and solutions to create a new direction. The leaders want to “keep learning as fast as the world is changing.”

Taylor hopes that readers of Simply Brilliant will take away the encouragement to shake things up and know there is no limit when trying to imagine the future.
