WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children)

What is WIC?

The Alaska WIC program aims to assist low-income and nutritionally at-risk women who are pregnant, women who are currently breastfeeding (up to the infant’s first birthday), non-breastfeeding postpartum women (up to six months after the birth of an infant or after pregnancy ends), infants, and children up to their fifth birthday. Benefits include supplemental nutritious foods, nutrition education, counseling at WIC clinics, and screening and referrals for health concerns, welfare and social services.

Who qualifies for WIC?

You can participate in the WIC program if you:

  • Live in Alaska.
  • Have a nutritional need (WIC staff can help determine this).
  • Are a pregnant or breastfeeding woman.
  • Postpartum or have a baby under six months.
  • Have a child under five years old.
  • Have a family income meeting WIC Income Eligibility Guidelines.

How do I apply for WIC?

WIC has offices all over Alaska. Call your local WIC clinic to make an appointment. At your appointment, WIC staff will check to see if you and your family qualify and will provide you with the appropriate forms.

If you live in a community without a WIC office, you can apply through your community health clinic.

What documents do I need to bring to my appointment?

In order to apply for assistance from WIC, you must have:

  • An ID for yourself and each child.
  • Proof you are an Alaska resident, such as your driver’s license, voter registration, library card, any bill with your address on it, or a rent/mortgage receipt.
  • Proof of income such as a paycheck stub or a W2 Form, proof that you receive SNAP benefits, Medicaid, Denali Kid Care or free/reduced-price School Lunch.
  • Completed application forms (if you filled them out before your appointment).
  • All children you are applying for present at your appointment.
