2026 Color the Kuskokwim: Growing a Tradition of Health, Fun, and Community

Rain clouds and wet weather could not dampen the spirit of the 2026 Color the Kuskokwim Run in McGrath. Forty-five participants from McGrath and Nikolai came together for an afternoon filled with color, laughter, connection, and community pride.
Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, organizers expanded activities and partnerships to create a more engaging experience. Southcentral Foundation Rehabilitation Therapies and Exercise started the event with an energetic group warm-up, helping everyone prepare for the run. SCF Behavioral Health provided a spaghetti meal, which quickly became a favorite among attendees.
The event offered something for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. Participants enjoyed the color run itself, along with opportunities to socialize, stay active, take photos, and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
The highlight of the day was watching every participant become covered in color. Seeing children, parents, Elders, friends, and neighbors encouraging one another and sharing in the excitement was especially rewarding for organizers and volunteers.
“I didn’t know my daughter wanted to participate in competitive running; I am thankful for events like these that introduce her to new interests!” shared community member Dara Whitworth.
The success of the event would not have been possible without the support of McGrath School employees, community volunteers, and SCF employees, whose efforts made the day welcoming and enjoyable for all.
More than just a fun run, Color the Kuskokwim promotes healthy lifestyles and strengthens community connections by bringing people together in a positive, supportive setting where wellness can be celebrated. As participants headed home with full stomachs, bright shirts, and lasting memories, it was clear that the event has grown into a celebration of health and community spirit — one that many hope will continue as an annual tradition.
