A significant step forward for the Alaska Native Community is underway with the transfer of federal land at the site of Quyana Qenq’a to Southcentral Foundation.
Congress passed the Southcentral Foundation Land Transfer Act of 2025 on Sept. 29 that directs the Department of Health and Human Services to transfer approximately 3.4 acres of federal property in downtown Anchorage to SCF. Read Congressman Begich’s press release on the Southcentral Foundation Land Transfer Act of 2025.
The land transfer clears the way for SCF to replace the small, aging building on the property with Quyana Qenq’a. The project represents an important step in reclaiming and revitalizing land for Alaska Native peoples while creating space to meet growing demand for services in downtown Anchorage.
Alaska Native cultural values will shape the building’s architecture, service delivery, and programming. This space will connect individuals living with severe and persistent mental illness to comprehensive healthcare, housing support, case management, and connections to community so they can pursue healthy, independent lives. The facility is slated to open in 2028.
“This land transfer creates an opportunity to build a place where people living with persistent mental illness can find connection, support, and a path toward greater independence and stability,” said SCF President and CEO April Kyle. “We are deeply grateful to Congressman Begich, Senator Murkowski, Senator Sullivan, and their dedicated staff for championing this bill and for their personal commitment to advancing this important project for the Alaska Native Community. Their dedication, leadership, and sustained efforts helped move this project forward. The building called Quyana Qenq’a will provide a lasting resource for people and families seeking compassionate, culturally responsive care and support.”
With ownership of the land, SCF can steward the property with a long-term vision centered on the needs of customer-owners and the community.
