Recognizing Native American Heritage Month

Participants in the November 2025 Culture Connects model their regalia.
November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to reflect on the cultures, traditions, histories, and contributions of Alaska Native and American Indian peoples. Indigenous peoples have lived in Alaska and across the nation for thousands of years. The ability to thrive in harmony with the land speaks to the strength and resilience passed from generation to generation. Southcentral Foundation invites you to explore the ways Alaska Native and American Indian culture thrives in communities this month and every month.
Around Anchorage, community members can learn more about the history of the area by visiting the Indigenous place name markers installed in partnership between the Native Village of Eklutna and Anchorage Park Foundation. These markers tell the significance of the landmark for the Dena’ina people who call this land home and return the Dena’ina name to each location. Year-round, the Alaska Native Heritage Center and Anchorage Museum highlight the cultures of Alaska Native peoples, sharing the regalia, lifestyles, and tools from throughout Alaska.

The Indigenous Place Name marker for Qin Cheghi, The Ridge Where We Cry, is one of the markers placed around the Anchorage area.
Nationally, nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov provides information to learn more about Alaska Native and American Indian cultures across the country through curated collections at the Smithsonian Museum, Library of Congress, and other resources. Special sections highlight the role of Alaska Native and American Indian veterans in the United States, works of art, and historical photographs.
SCF encourages you to find the resources in your area to learn more about the Alaska Native and American Indian peoples who call it home. Many Tribes share their local histories and stories to carry culture for future generations.
SCF hopes you find connection and appreciation for Alaska Native and American Indian cultures during Native American Heritage Month.
